• Truthful Tuesday Volume One

I’d like to welcome you to the first post of a weekly series known as Truthful Tuesday.  Every Tuesday, I will be admitting to one of my “off-beat” food related behaviors.

This week’s Truthful Tuesday: I Hate Big Spoons

IMG_3853  I hate big spoons.  Let me clarify that statement, I hate eating with big spoons.  Actually I should probably just say that I’m afraid of big spoons.  Sure, if you’re making a sauce, you’ll need to stir with a big spoon.  Often cookie recipes call for the use of a large wooden spoon, something I can calmly handle.  Even a ladle for portioning out soup is appropriate and understandable.  But if I’m having my daily bowl of cereal and I get handed a big spoon, “Houston we have a problem.”

I just like to use teaspoons for everything.  They’re not heavy, they fit comfortably in your mouth, and you will always get a perfect portion size on your spoon.  Big spoons, like soup spoons, have a much higher margin of error.  The larger the spoon, the heavier it is, making it harder to keep food on the spoon during the transport period between table and mouth.  Spilling just becomes inevitable.  Plus, larger spoons just look scary.  Almost as if they could just get stuck to the roof of your mouth by locking to your top jaw and teeth.

I don’t doubt that this is a completely irrational fear.  To be honest, I don’t even remember when this big spoon hatred began or how.  All I know is that at some point in my life, I looked down at my table setting and thought, “what the hell am I supposed to do with this ridiculously big spoon,” and I switched to a smaller one.

I agree with your assessment of large spoons. They should stay in the kitchen and away from the table.
