• The 2 For 1 Special

    Monday April 13, 2015

Well, it’s sometime around 3:00pm on Monday April 13, 2015 and I’m mindlessly searching through the internet.  I end up on Time Out New York’s website and start looking around for “things to do.” Naturally, I make a beeline to the food related events and festival section and see the greatest thing ever.*  Tomorrow is April 14th!  Do you know what that means?!  That means that it is “Free Cone Day” at Ben & Jerry’s.  How did I not realize this earlier?!  As I click through to get all the pertinent details, something extremely jarring happens.  I have to re-read the sentence to make sure I’m hallucinating the words.  Today, April 13, 2015 is the 10th Anniversary of Sprinkles Cupcakes and to celebrate, the company is giving away a free cupcake to each customer at all locations from open to close.  Now what do I do?!  I’m so comfortable on my couch and I’ve already been outside earlier today.  The presidential sized debate in my head as to whether or not to go get a cupcake has now cast a shadow over me.  I guess I will do what any normal, rational 28 year old will do; I’ll call my mom.  We are now discussing the pros and cons of going to get a free cupcake.  Pros:  free cupcake, free cupcake, and free cupcake.  Cons:  taking the smelly subway, waiting on line, and ultimately being lazy.  The competition is close, but free cupcake wins, so off I go to the Upper East Side.  Okay, so I don’t exactly go right away…  I wanted to look on Instagram and see what Sprinkles’ account had been posting.  After scrolling through #Sprinkles10 and realizing that it’s almost 4:15pm I decide to get going in order to beat the rush hour traffic.  Or at least attempt to.  Sneakers on, leather jacket on, sunglasses on, and I’m off.  I get to 59th and Lex and within my first three steps off of the train, some idiot walks into me.  After rolling my eyes and reminding myself why I’m here (free cupcake) I head to the street and walk to Sprinkles.  Then I walk past Sprinkles.  That’s because the line is just short of the end of the block.  Fabulous!  About ten minutes into my wait, the girl in front of me turns around asking me to confirm that this is the free cupcake line.  With a completely unsure look on my face I say, “yea, or at least I hope it is.  I guess.  I assume so.”  That confident answer made her laugh, turn around, and put her headphones back on.  I love making friends.  I finally get inside Sprinkles and have the anxiety provoking task of deciding what flavor cupcake I want.  My favorite one of theirs is the S’mores, but Sprinkles didn’t have that one available.  I had narrowed it down to Red Velvet and Chocolate Marshmallow.  I figured, once it’s my turn, I’d have chosen between the two and immediately following that though, the girl behind the counter shouted, “next,” obviously referring to me.  As a libra, I tend to be indecisive.  Especially with important decisions like which cupcake flavor to choose.  So I did the most logical thing.  I got both.  It was a 2 for 1 special!
