• Until Next Time Wooly’s

IMG_4042It had to happen sooner or later.  I needed to venture into the living hell that is known as Times Square.  Of course, I needed to do this because I was going on a food adventure.  It seems in this context the word “need” has become much more flexible in definition.  Regardless, I needed to try Wooly’s which meant I needed to go to Times Square.  For those of you who may not be familiar with Wooly’s, let me explain.  They serve shaved snow.  Much like Snowdays Shavery, as mentioned in a previous post, I Love Saturdays And Snowdays.  The shaved cream/snow/ice trend is growing super fast in NYC and I’m all for it!  I don’t know what it is about this delicious dessert, but when I want it, I want it now (cue Veruca Salt: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)!  In preparation for today’s adventure, I check the weather, only to find out that it is barely pushing 50 degrees outside.  I believe it was less than a week ago when we were in the 80s.  Make Up Your Mind Mother Nature!!  Jacket and scarf reluctantly put on, I grab my keys and start on my walk into the abyss.  I’m cold.  Like, I wish I was wearing a hat cold.  Or, I wish I wasn’t wearing slip on sneakers with my ankles exposed.  Determined to fight through this unsightly terrain of tundra-like weather and extreme crowdedness, I head West on 41st street towards 8th avenue in order to avoid the war-zone that is 42nd street.

I’d like to pause just for a moment to point out some fun things I noticed during my trip to Wooly’s:

    – As I’m crossing the street, the last car stops short and I miss slamming my right hip and thigh into the trunk by about 1/4 of an inch.

    – Multiple people are shouting at me about taking bus tours (I’m walking 20mph faster than almost everyone else and I am alone with my signature “resting bitch face.”  You tell me if I look like a tourist who wants to hop on a bus).

    –  A man in front of me has 2 suspicious looking large wet spots on the inside of his jeans, 1 on each leg.

I’m now crossing over 44th and 8th and walk into City Kitchen, where Wooly’s is located.  It’s pretty crowded, but surprisingly there isn’t a line.  Being new to this whole “shaved snow” experience, I want to make sure I like it without going for too bold of a flavor.  I’m also pretty hungry from my walk over, so I spare no expense when it comes to toppings.  An Original Leche flavored “snow” with strawberries, cookies ‘n’ cream, shredded coconut, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream to top it off!  I am ready to find a seat and let the feast begin.  I find an empty stool at one of the counters and within seconds, am actually dying of heat because the sun is beating straight through the window.  Off goes the jacket and the scarf.  I’m thankful to be eating this cold, delicious, sweet treat while unintentionally baking in the sun. I have to say, this stuff is REALLY good and if you haven’t tried it yet, I urge you to do so (assuming you are not allergic to any of the ingredients, so just check first).  Feeling satisfied, I put on a brave face and am ready to face Times Square again.  And then I get outside and think it’s just way too cold and crowded so I get in the subway.  As I descend the subway stairs I think happily, “until next time, Wooly’s.”
