• So, If You Have Any Ideas For A New Creation

11356823_1450583698572825_1091097124_nDo you ever get “kitchen carried away?”  Maybe you’re in the mood to cook something and the whole process takes on a life of it’s own.  Perhaps you’ve begun to bake something and it just didn’t come out right, but instead of tossing the whole thing, you continuously “amend” the problem.  These are a couple of the entertaining activities that go on in my parent’s kitchen and whether or not I’d like to admit it, some of these behavior have transferred to my own kitchen.

A large amount of these “carried away kitchen” events occur with the teamwork between myself and my Mom.  Usually my Dad is the “fresh out of the oven” taste tester and my brother is the “it’s been frozen so let it defrost in the refrigerator overnight, but throw it out after two days” taste tester.  I spend more time at my parent’s house than my brother, so my taste testing is about 50/50.  At times, when I am Chef du Jour, I will bring my experiments to my parent’s house so that they can be my taste testers (and of course, I freeze everything as well).  It’s a whole family affair!

During recent visits at my parent’s house, my Mom and I had come up with some good and some not so good food creations…

The Chocolate Covered Popcorn  was a minor disaster.  There was no measuring of the chocolate to popcorn ratio, which lead to an abundance of dark brown shiny clumps in a bowl.  We thought to add sprinkles for color.  That could have worked, had we not unintentionally mixed the sprinkles into the brown clumpy mess.  My Mom suggested putting in some marshmallows to “lighten it up.”  After continuing to add more sprinkles and more popcorn, we both agreed it looked like actual throw up.  I said, “let’s just throw this shit out.”  My Mom replied, “No, I’ll put it in a bag, maybe Daddy will want it.”  I think my Dad ended up eating some the next day.

The Rice Krispies Treats That Are Not Made Of Rice Krispies had a positive outcome.  In actuality we made marshmallow treats, but for some reason, it’s very hard to not call them Rice Krispies Treats.  Following the recipe on the bag of marshmallows, we made two different batches of treats.  The first one I did primarily on my own using Lucky Charms.  It was going pretty smoothly until the mixing/gloves incident.  Based on my Mom’s recommendation, I put on food safe gloves in order to mix the cereal and marshmallow concoction; however I did not use non-stick spray on the gloves before beginning this process.  My Mom had to come to my rescue with a spoon and a knife, basically scraping chunks of the mixture off of my hands while I just stood over the bowl.  Lesson learned, I began making batch number two out of crushed Oreo pieces.  I am all ready to start mixing, sprayed gloves and all, and it’s like 500 degrees!  I absolutely can’t wedge my hands into this burning hot marshmallow mess.  Well, superhero Mom came to save the day once again and used her magic powers to mix the treats quickly with a spoon and transfer it into the tray.  Again, I stood next to her with my hands over the bowl looking like I was brain dead.  Later on, my Mom had the idea of making an ice cream sandwich using pieces of marshmallow treat.  I will not describe the situation created by the melting ice cream.  Instead, I will let you come up with your own visual of the mess.

Although we might act as if our kitchens are more for scientific lab testing than culinary work, we’ve managed to come up with some pretty delicious foods.  So, if you have any ideas for a new creation…
